365 Days of Middle-earth ~ Day 38: Dís

Dís (TA 2760) was the daughter of King Thrain II and the sister of Thorin and Frerin; she was also the mother of Fíli and Kíli, and is the only female dwarf specifically named by Tolkien (female dwarves made up around a third of the Dwarf population and are seldom seen by others; when they are, they are often mistaken for male Dwarves, as rumour has it they, too, have beards). Like her brothers, she was born in the Lonely Mountain, from which she was driven into exile in 2770 when Smaug sacked their kingdom.
