365 Days of Middle-earth ~ Day 99: Moon-letters

Thrór's Map

Moon-letters were a form of secret writing created and used by the Dwarves, who held privacy in high regard. They were runes written in silver pen, which could only be seen and read when held under the light of the moon. Some could be read by any moonlight, but many could only be read under the moonlight of the same phase and on the same day of the year as when they had originally been written. The only mention of them is in The Hobbit¸ when Elrond holds up Thrór’s map, given by Gandaf to Thorin Oakenshield, for the Company to read.
