365 Days of Middle-earth ~ Day 130: Meneltarma

Meneltarma (Q. ‘Pillar of the Heavens’) was the highest mountain in Númenor, and the holiest place in the land before its degeneration. Situated in the middle of the island, one could see from its summit the White Tower which marked the Haven of the Eldar in Eressëa. The lower slopes of the mountain were smooth and gentle, but as one ascended, they grew steeper, until passage was nearly impossible, save by use of a specially cut road. It was on this summit that the Three Prayers were spoken to Ilúvatar; while people were free to ascend the summit, only the Kings were allowed to speak, and only in recitation of the Prayers.
