365 Days of Middle-earth ~ Day 140: Durthang

Durthang (S. ‘dark-oppression’) was a castle built early in the Third Age following the overthrow of Sauron during the War of the Last Alliance; the victorious people of Gondor built several strong fortresses inside the Black Land to guard against Mordor and control all movement in and out of the country. Durthang was built upon a high rock-wall overlooking both the Isenmouthe as well as the pass from Gorgoroth to Udûn. As the power of Gondor waned, the castle was deserted following the Great Plague in TA 1640 and taken over by the Nazgûl, who turned it into an Orc-hold.

Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee traveled along the road leading from Durthang when they – disguised as Orcs – were forced to march with an Orc troop from Durthang before being able to slip away (March 18, 3019 TA).
