365 Days of Middle-earth ~ Day 231: Dwalin

Dwalin (b. TA 2772), second son of Fundin, was one of the companions of Thráin II (2841-2845) in the King’s attempt to reclaim Erebor; when Thráin vanished in Mirkwood, the Dwarves returned to Ered Luin, where the King’s son, Thorin, had taken over reign. Dwalin, along with his brother Balin, joined Thorin in his quest to reclaim Erebor. After their success, Dwalin settled in Erebor, where he lived peacefully until his death (FO 91-92).

  1. So nothing was ever found out about what happened to Thrain?

  2. Thrain was captured and put in jail in Dol Guldur. The Necromancer took his ring of power.

Later Gandalf found Thrain in jail, at this time the dwarf was so diminished that he did not even remember his name (and Gandalf did not reconize the dwarf lord), Thrain gave the Map of the Lonely Mountain to the wizard then passed away.

It's only when Gandalf meet Thorin Oakenshield, years later at the Prancing Pney, he realized who was this old dwarf.

  3. Exactly. (I left that part out to avoid giving too much away in my post.) :-)
