It sure has been awhile since I ventured back into the world of blogging and social media, but what better way to jump back in than with a review of one of the coolest pieces I have had the joy of adding to my collection?

I was on Instagram one afternoon several months ago and was intrigued by an advertisement I saw for "Lord of Maps", an account run by Isaac Dushku featuring various maps in the style of JRR Tolkien. As the algorithm would have it, the map that caught my eye was none other than a map of my own home state - New Hampshire. Of course I had to grab one!

From the minute my order arrived I knew I was going to be impressed. For starters, my map came in the coolest packaging, which I have refused to throw away:

As for the map itself, I was extremely impressed by the attention to detail and the accuracy of the locations. Seeing my hometown as well as all the places in New Hampshire I have visited adapted to the style of Tolkien's own maps of Middle-earth was a real joy. The maps come in two styles - original, which is very crisp and clean, and reminiscent of what you would find in a copy of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit; and the aged-look style, which is what I imagine Bilbo would have hanging on a wall in Bag End. I ordered the 16x20 map in the aged look style and it ended up perfectly matching the earthy tones of our study:

I chose not to buy the map with frame and have come to regret that decision as finding a suitable frame has been a real challenge. I would highly recommend purchasing with the frame, which amplifies the vintage look of the map and turns it into a real statement piece.

In addition to the 50 United States, Lord of Maps offers maps of various other countries and regions, including Japan, Africa, England, and even a World Map. You can also find stickers and t-shirts featuring some of these designs.

I will definitely be adding more maps to my collection, and if you're a fan of maps in general or just looking to add something unique to your (or a loved one's) Tolkien collection, you'll definitely want to grab a map or two of your own. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite items in my collection.

Be sure to check out more of Isaac's work at LordofMaps.com and follow him on Instagram!

Britta Siemenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08416519823032365698noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654162646301256777.post-1655456431391230182019-02-14T17:40:00.002-05:002019-02-14T17:42:42.059-05:00Review: Wisdom of Gandalf Pendant and Aragorn Engagement Ring from Badali JewelryHi everyone! It's been awhile. What better way to return from a wee hiatus than by writing about my favorite people/products?!

THE WISDOM OF GANDALF PENDANT

The fine folks at Badali Jewelry have done it again. Following the success of their Eowyn Shieldmaiden pendant, they have just released another piece inspired by a character quote - this time by Gandalf, whose wisdom is unmatched. This pendant, available with either a chain or a choker, features what is perhaps his most famous line from The Fellowship of the Ring:

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Just look at all the little details!

I opted for the 24" rope chain, as I've never had much luck with chokers or anything that sits too close to the skin on or around my neck/collar. I love how low this hangs down. It makes for a nice statement piece.

If you follow me on any form of social media, you probably know by now that Gandalf is my favorite Tolkien character - so this piece is perfect for someone like me! And perfect for anyone who enjoys wearing their favorite quote. This is such a simple, yet beautifully done piece - just like everything made at Badali.
You can get yours now over at http://badalijewelry.com/wisdom-of-gandalf.html!

ENGAGEMENT RING OF ARAGORN AND ARWEN

This one was a gift to myself. I hadn't bought anything in awhile and I had waited so very long for Badali to make their version of the Ring of Barahir. I was devastated after my original one from Noble Collection lost its gem several years ago; and then I realized that Badali would definitely make a better one anyway - and I was right!

It might be an overreaction to say I want to cry every time I get a new piece in the mail, but it's true. I get goosebumps opening my packages and butterflies in my stomach. My eyes water a little when I see the amazing work of art before my eyes. How they manage to capture the essence of Tolkien's books so perfectly each time never fails to amaze me.

As you can see, I now have both Aragorn's and Arwen's engagement rings:

We can almost envision the moment in the Middle-earth™ year of 2980, when a young Aragorn entered Lórien to meet his beloved Arwen Undómiel™. Among the majestic trees of Lothlórien, Aragorn™ presented Arwen™ with his family ring, the ring of Barahir, and he pledged to her his love and life. There, together they swore their loyalty upon the hill of Cerin Amroth. Over the ages the ring changed hands many times, ultimately ending up in the care of Elrond of Rivendell. In the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, Elrond called Aragorn by his true name, Elessar, and delivered unto him the heirlooms of his house: The Ring of Barahir and Shards of Narsil.

It's a cute film and well worth the watch. How many references to Peter Jackson's films can you spot?

Apparently taking place before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, it will follow the standard free-to-play model, in which the game and most (if not all) of its features can be enjoyed for free but microtransactions can provide additional content and benefits. No release date or additional information has been given at this time, but it may be a welcome addition to the Middle-earth video game collection.

Fans can currently immerse themselves in virtual Middle-earth via Standing Stone Games' The Lord of the Rings Online, which debuted in 2007 and has successfully passed the 10-year mark. The game is free-to-play and can be downloaded at lotro.com.Britta Siemenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08416519823032365698noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654162646301256777.post-31504880065576305512018-04-15T10:37:00.004-04:002018-04-15T10:39:03.868-04:00What We Know So Far About Amazon's Upcoming 'Lord of the Rings' SeriesAfter plenty of rumours and speculation, it was finally announced back in November that Amazon had won the $250 million rights to Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings novels and would be adapting the story into a five-season "prequel" series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon plans to spend $1 billion on the series (including casting, producers, and visual effects), which would make it the most expensive series in TV history.

There's no word yet on the content of the series, but given that it's been labelled a "prequel" to The Lord of the Rings and Amazon is working with The Tolkien Estate, they certainly have a lot of material to work with.

While The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit director Sir Peter Jackson played no part in the talks between Amazon and the Tolkien Estate, he is reportedly in talks about his involvement in this series.

Other Lord of the Rings alum, however, are not as enthusiastic.

John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli in The Lord of the Rings films, suggested this was more about money than anything.

"Why we quite need Lord of the Rings as a TV series baffles me slightly," he said. "I mean, poor Tolkien must be spinning in his grave."

Andy Serkis has already said he would pass if approached to reprise his role as Gollum, instead suggesting that a "fresh approach" would be more worthwhile.

"I don’t think they will, and nor should they, because I really do think that it’s a wonderful opportunity to tell Tolkien’s incredible story through a long form. If I was putting myself in their shoes, I’d be wanting to create something completely fresh and see the world in a completely different way."

One actor who isn't quite ready to hand over his role to someone else, however, is Sir Ian McKellen. When asked about the upcoming series on The Graham Norton Show, McKellen made his feelings quite clear:

"I haven't said yes because I haven't been asked," the actor continued. "But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it?
"Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I'm not too old [yet]."

While there's no scheduled release date yet, part of Amazon's deal requires them to begin production within two years, so it'll be on the way soon!

A new Tolkien exhibit at Oxford's Bodleian Library will open this summer and feature a variety of manuscripts, letters, maps, and artwork by the author, including three previously unseen works (including Linquë Súrissë (1960s), which from the Elvish language Quenya translates to "grass in the wind").

The library will also release a catalog of more than 300 Tolkien materials which will become available in the US in July.

"The vivid abstract paintings entitled There and Here show Tolkien as a young student at Oxford finding his own artistic voice,” says Catherine McIlwaine, the Bodleian Libraries’ Tolkien archivist and the curator of the exhibition, in a statement. “They indicate that he was beginning to draw, not just what he could see, but what he could imagine.” [From The Art Newspaper]
Another new Middle-earth publication is coming out this year! A Middle-earth Traveller: Sketches from Bag End to Mordor will be released on 4 October 2018 by HarperCollins and will feature the artwork of John Howe - who, like Alan Lee, also provided conceptual designs for The Lord of the Rings films.

The book is available for pre-order on Amazon UK.

From the publisher:

Let acclaimed Tolkien artist John Howe take you on an unforgettable
journey across Middle-earth, from Bag End to Mordor, in this richly
illustrated sketchbook fully of previously unseen artwork, anecdotes and
meditations on Middle-earth.

Middle-earth has been mapped,
Bilbo’s and Frodo’s journeys plotted and measured, but Middle-earth
remains a wilderland for all that. The roads as yet untraveled far
outnumber those down which Tolkien had time to wander.

A
Middle-Earth Traveller presents a walking tour of Tolkien’s
Middle-earth, visiting not only places central to his stories, but also
those just over the hill or beyond the horizon. Events from Tolkien’s
books are explored – battles of the different ages that are almost part
of legend by the time of The Lord of the Rings; lost kingdoms and
ancient myths, as well as those places only hinted at: kingdoms of the
far North and lands beyond the seas.

Sketches that have an
‘on-the-spot’ feel to them are interwoven with the artist’s observations
gleaned from Tolkien’s books and recollections of his time spent in
Middle-earth while working alongside Peter Jackson on the Lord of the
Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. Combining concept work produced for
films, existing Middle-earth art and many new paintings and sketches
exclusive to this book, A Middle-earth Traveller will take the reader on
a unique and unforgettable journey across Tolkien’s magical landscape.

What initially began making the rounds on social media as a suspected April Fool's prank earlier this month has now been confirmed as an official release by HarperCollins: once again edited by Christopher Tolkien and illustrated by Alan Lee, The Fall of Gondolin will be published on 30 August 2018 and follow in the same format as the previously released Beren and Luthien.

The book will run about 304 pages and will be available in hardcover, deluxe hardcover, large print, and e-book. In the US it will be published under Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

In addition to the book's release, the official Tolkien Calendar will be published on the same day and feature paintings from the book. There will also be a series events featuring Alan Lee, similar to last year's events following Beren and Luthien.

From the publisher:

In the Tale of The Fall of Gondolin are two of
the greatest powers in the world. There is Morgoth of the uttermost
evil, unseen in this story but ruling over a vast military power from
his fortress of Angband. Deeply opposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in
might only to Manwë, chief of the Valar: he is called the Lord of
Waters, of all seas, lakes, and rivers under the sky. But he works in
secret in Middle-earth to support the Noldor, the kindred of the Elves
among whom were numbered Húrin and Túrin Turambar.

Central to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, beautiful
but undiscoverable. It was built and peopled by Noldorin Elves who,
when they dwelt in Valinor, the land of the gods, rebelled against their
rule and fled to Middle-earth. Turgon King of Gondolin is hated and
feared above all his enemies by Morgoth, who seeks in vain to discover
the marvellously hidden city, while the gods in Valinor in heated debate
largely refuse to intervene in support of Ulmo’s desires and designs.

Into this world comes Tuor, cousin of Túrin, the instrument of Ulmo’s
designs. Guided unseen by him Tuor sets out from the land of his birth
on the fearful journey to Gondolin, and in one of the most arresting
moments in the history of Middle-earth the sea-god himself appears to
him, rising out of the ocean in the midst of a storm. In Gondolin he
becomes great; he is wedded to Idril, Turgon’s daughter, and their son
is Eärendel, whose birth and profound importance in days to come is
foreseen by Ulmo.

At last comes the terrible ending. Morgoth learns through an act of
supreme treachery all that he needs to mount a devastating attack on the
city, with Balrogs and dragons and numberless Orcs. After a minutely
observed account of the fall of Gondolin, the tale ends with the escape
of Tuor and Idril, with the child Eärendel, looking back from a cleft in
the mountains as they flee southward, at the blazing wreckage of their
city. They were journeying into a new story, the Tale of Eärendel, which
Tolkien never wrote, but which is sketched out in this book from other
sources.

Following his presentation of Beren and Lúthien Christopher Tolkien has used the same ‘history in sequence’ mode in the writing of this edition of The Fall of Gondolin. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, it was ‘the first real story of this imaginary world’ and, together with Beren and Lúthien and The Children of Húrin, he regarded it as one of the three ‘Great Tales’ of the Elder Days.

I took a brief social media hiatus after the holidays but have returned with a quick review of what is easily my favorite Badali piece (I know I say that every time, but it just proves how much their craftsmanship improves with each new design).

This pendant is the shield carried by Eowyn, featuring two horses of Rohan (one of my favourite motifs) with her famous words to the Witch-king, "No living Man am I, You look upon a Woman" on the backside (again, I just love that their items are inspired by the books and not the films!). It is also treated with an antique finish.

As you can see, it's a good-sized medallion; however, it is not unbearably large, nor is it too heavy. I generally shy away from large pieces but I absolutely love this one. I wear a lot of solid colour tunic-style shirts and dresses, and this medallion goes perfectly with them! It's an engaging focal point of any outfit and a great conversation starter. Most people instantly recognise it for what it is.
They have an impressive line of items, and the quality and prices far surpass anything put out by "official" replica websites. I've been a fan of Badali since 2004 when I purchased one of their most popular Lord of the Rings items, the Gollum One Ring on chain, and I've been buying up the rest of their Hobbit and Lord of the Rings lines ever since.

This year, they've been working on some new items and I'm so thrilled to be able to start adding those to my collection as well! Yesterday they unveiled their most recent creation, Eowyn's Shieldmaiden Medallion, which I immediately treated myself to for Christmas.
Additionally, new figures have been added to the existing line of Pop! movie figures, including two variations of Gollum (with and without fish), Lurtz, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Treebeard, and two more exclusives - indivisible Gollum (Barnes & Noble) and King Elessar (Toys R Us).
Personally, I am looking forward to getting Treebeard (he was on my Funko wishlist back in July) and the Mystery Minis! Those miniature villains are so adorable!

In Cooking for Halflings and Monsters: 111 Comfy, Cozy Recipes for

'eleventy-one' original recipes to inspire you. Lovingly illustrated and
written with dry humor throughout, this charming cookbook is sure to
delight you and your family, friends, and any other lucky halflings (or
monsters) who show up in your kitchen. So crack open a beer, rustle up
some "Gündürnüb's Grüb," and come along on this epic culinary journey.
Your quest for delicious recipes is complete!

all the recipes within! (Amazon)

While
it took me a bit longer than I'd hoped to get started on this review,
the timing actually turned out to be pretty good: I ended up baking at
the end of Tolkien Week, on the annual celebration of Hobbit Day (aka
Bilbo's and Frodo's birthday celebration), and also the official
beginning of fall. Originally, my aim was to make a three-course meal
using one of the suggestions found at the back of the book; but there
were too many desserts to choose from!

I enlisted the
help of my mother, since she's a more experienced baker than I am (plus
it was a fun mother-daughter experience) and we found three tasty
desserts to make. We made all three at once in a span of about two
hours. All three recipes called for pecans, which we had an
over-abundance of, thanks to my aunt! The remaining ingredients were
already in our kitchen. The
best part about making these three desserts is that my house still
smells of spices, creating a very cozy fall atmosphere.

This
was my first review of a cookbook, and it was so much fun baking these
three recipes that I'll likely return to this book and make some other
meals to review at a later date – so be sure to check back! But in the
meantime, visit Amazon to get your own copy of Cooking With Halflings & Monsters so you can make your own delicious treats! The book is full of fun illustrations, dry humour, and lovely photos – whether you're a fan of cooking or a fan of fantasy, it's a must have either way!

Read on to see photos and descriptions of the individual desserts!

Hrist's Nutmeggers

The
Nutmeggers basically turned out like sugar cookies coated in fall
spices and topped with pecans. They were so delicious and such a cinch
to make. This recipe yielded about 36 cookies, so there were plenty to
go around! I found myself constantly snacking on these while waiting for
the other desserts to bake. I plan on baking these again to bring to work during the holidays!

Stained Glass Morsels

I
love anything with apples, especially when you include spices like
cinnamon and nutmeg. And even better is that these pastries are all
individually sized. I could eat these every day and not get sick of them. (Mine may not have come out as eye-catching as the
ones in Astrid's book, but they sure did taste amazing!)
Pumpkin Streusel Pie for Randgrið

The pumpkin streusel pie was probably my favourite; it was a nice twist on traditional pumpkin pie. I loved the top layer of oats/nuts, which was a nice crunchy contrast to the softness of the pumpkin. Even my boyfriend, who is a lover of traditional pumpkin pie, was a big fan of this one! I can't wait to make this one again for Thanksgiving!Britta Siemenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08416519823032365698noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654162646301256777.post-76698241759486025902017-09-01T17:23:00.000-04:002017-09-01T17:23:19.691-04:002018 Tolkien Calendar Features Artwork from 'Beren and Lúthien'The 2018 Tolkien calendar has been published and features watercolours and pencil sketches (by Alan Lee) taken from the recently published Beren and Lúthien.
We've made this a tradition over the last few years, as there's plenty of gorgeous scenery to enjoy in Maine and Northern New Hampshire; and there are several bookstores that I can't always get to, aside from during these trips.

THE MAINE BOOKHOUSE

Our first stop on the way was The Maine Bookhouse in Oxford, Maine. The owner, Harry, was about to close up shop, so to avoid wasting his time, I simply inquired as to what Tolkien items he had. He immediately remembered me and began searching behind his desk for me while I browsed the usual section, and when I came back, he had pulled out The Lord of the Rings on audio cassette. He mentioned the possibility of having more tucked away somewhere, and that he would try to dig them out for me if we came by later.

THE LOCAL BOOKIE

The next day, we ventured into my favourite town of North Conway, New Hampshire, where we hit another of my regular bookstores: The Local BOOKie. The woman I usually deal with, Karen, happened to be off that day, but Pat was just as delightful and shed some light on just how much effort Karen puts into each and every book that comes into her store. I only ended up with one book I didn't already have – The Two Towers – but I managed to replace a bunch of worn copies and also stock up on some books for future giveaways/trades/etc.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT/DRAGON'S LAIR COMICS/ROUTE 26 ANTIQUES

Our last shopping spree was in Norway, Maine, just down the street from Oxford. Harry had told me before that The Maine Bookhouse had opened up a sister store, Food For Thought, and we finally had a chance to check it out. I asked the woman (whose name I unfortunately didn't catch, but she was wonderful!) if she knew of any Tolkien items, and she pulled out a few items I already had... but then she showed me Lin Carter's A Look Behind the Lord of the Rings in a different version than what I had and a different version of The Hobbit (1977) soundtrack on vinyl that I obviously couldn't turn down!

Down the street was Dragon's Lair comic shop, where I picked up The Hobbit Monopoly. Then we made our way back to The Maine Bookhouse. Harry wasn't there, but the woman who was, Jolene, pulled out two items he had set aside for me: The Hobbit on audio cassette and The Tale of Beren and Lúthien on vinyl, read by Christopher Tolkien.

Our final stop was Route 26 Antiques, where I scored well on books last year. This year I found none, but I managed to get three action figures (Twilight Frodo, Frodo in the Barrow-Downs, and a Haradrim Warrior). As we were leaving, my boyfriend spotted two Balrog figures – a bust from Gentle Giant and a polystone statue from Sideshow Collectibles – both at extremely reasonable prices. He ended up grabbing those as my big anniversary gift.

Overall, it was an extremely fruitful trip. We did a lot of other fun things as well, but this was definitely a highlight. I'd also like to give a huge shout-out to my boyfriend, not only for putting up with me and my Tolkien obsession for eight years, but for going out of his way to actively support and encourage my collecting habit the way he does is really special.

Ever wondered what coffee in Middle-earth might have tasted like? I was actually thinking about this the other day, and then happened to stumble upon an article about an upcoming book from University of Florida botanist Walter Judd. In Flora of Middle-earth: Plants of JRR Tolkien's Legendarium, from Oxford University Press, Judd answers that burning question in addition to analysing over 160 other plants – either real or based on real species. Each entry features woodcut-style illustrations by Judd himself, very
much in the style of what you might find in a hobbit's book of flowers.

Tolkien was quite fond of nature, as you'll find in reading The Lord of the Rings especially; so it's no wonder there's enough material to devote an entire book to!
indulge in their passion together has evolved into so much more. "Comic
cons" now cater to all genres of entertainment – sci-fi/fantasy, horror,
anime, film, TV, music, and more. Some simply have a presence at conventions,
while others are the sole focus of these events. Whatever the case, if there's
a fanbase for it, there's probably a convention for it.

While a lot of cons do have cosplay contests, cosplay in general is not a

In an interview with MMO-Central, Standing Stone - the company which took over the game after Turbine switched over to mobile gaming - explained that the adventures will take place after the One Ring has been destroyed by Frodo and Sam.

“The reason that we can enter Mordor and not interfere with Frodo and
Sam’s mission is because the majority of the Mordor expansion is going
to take place after they’ve already gotten to Mount Doom. It would not
be appropriate, I don’t think, for adventurers to be gallivanting in
Mordor concurrent with Frodo and Sam doing their thing,” Jeff Libby
said. “Fairly early on in the expansion, I think you’ll see that things
get sorted out in a way, and then Mordor is our oyster.” (Check out the full interview here!)
Vinyl WishlistBack in September, myself and a few others compiled a list of Lord of the Rings themed Funko Pop! Vinyl figures we hoped would eventually be made, since the company had only put out a very limited line of Hobbit figures and one from The Lord of the Rings.

Since then, Funko has released a new line of figures, including such characters as the Balrog, a Nazgul (in regular and twilight form), Frodo and Sam, Gandalf, and Saruman. Additionally, a San Diego Comic Con exclusive featuring Aragorn and Arwen was also revealed; but beyond that, there's no word as to whether Funko will continue to put out more characters from The Lord of the Rings (though at this point I would be surprised if they didn't, since this line has been so well-received).

In any case, I decided to update my list and jot down a few characters I'd still really love to see in Funko Pop! form someday – but this time, I found myself thinking in general terms, and not just in regards to Peter Jackson's films. I came up with a ton, but narrowed it down for the sake of this post.

Here's a "Top Ten" list of my design – I'd love to hear your choices in the comments below:

From The Lord of the Rings Films

Galadriel (standard and mirror variation)

King of the Dead (glow in the dark, obviously!)

Boromir (with arrows in chest and boat accessory – a little depressing, I know)

Treebeard (I kept debating on whether I wanted Jackson's Treebeard or Ralph Bakshi's, but I think Jackson's would be more recognisable)

Gimli (because so far we only have one Dwarf and that is unacceptable! How is Funko Legolas supposed to sail West without his BFF?)

Mûmak (especially in baby form, this would just be the cutest Funko ever!)

Other Licenses

Tom Bombadil (based on LOTRO's design; since he was absent from the films, it's only right to include him as a Funko Pop!)

Bilbo (Rankin/Bass' version would be great for older fans who grew up with the original Hobbit/LOTR films or the collector looking for the unique item)

Misc.

J.R.R. Tolkien (this just seems like an obvious one)

(I absolutely love my set and promise to post images as soon as I can find a proper place to display all three prints!)

If you got your hands on that set, you know what an awesome deal it was; if you didn't, here's your chance to grab another unique piece of artwork inspired by The Lord of the Rings.

This officially licensed "Fellowship of the Ring" screen print by Jonathan Burton is one of 200 and features Isildur taking up his father Elendil's broken sword and facing off against Sauron during the War of the Last Alliance.

Grab yours now over at BottleneckGallery.com before they're gone!
